Bird proofing…. Really, is that even possible? The only true way to keep birds from gaining access to your building is to keep the doors closed. Obviously, that isn’t a very realistic option. But you can take away the flat spots within the building that birds find irresistible when building their nests.
It may not sound like much but if you can create an atmosphere that birds can pass through without nesting then you’ve just rid yourself of the mess and disease often associated with bird infestation. Elgin Service Center has gone to great lengths to eliminate these flat spots and ensure a clean and healthy environment within the K Building.
Alright…. How do you remove the flat spots?

As an option to the standard K Building frame customers can pick and choose to bird proof various aspects of the K Building based on their objectives for their new building. The standard K Building frame has a tapered open web leg that can be switched to straight I-Beam leg. This option also is very beneficial to those wanting to finish off the interior of their K Building, as the I-Beam leg will disappear within the finished wall cavity.
Another change to the standard K Building configuration is in the roof. Southern Yellow Pine purlins typically overlap on top of the red iron rafters, when bird proofing is desired, these purlins will hang into the side of the rafters allowing the roof deck to rest directly on top of the steel mainframes.

The ICC vapor barrier is another excellent choice for K Building customers. The Integral Condensation Control (ICC) roof panel incorporates a felt-like covering to the underside of the roof sheets that is bonded to the metal during the roll forming stage of the roof sheets. Choosing the ICC panel reduces labor costs and eliminates the loose, often-tattered vapor barrier that birds find irresistible.

Finally, the open web rafters are covered with a galvanized mesh completely removing the rafters as a nesting option. Birds may visit as they pass through open K Building structures but will find it very difficult to nest.
Customize your K Building by incorporating any or all of these bird-proofing measures in your livestock, equine, storage or farm shop buildings and you’ll quickly realize the benefit from the cleaner, healthier environment it provides.
Be sure to ask your K Building representative about bird proofing your K Building.
